Medical Assistance Transportation Program

Take the worry out of getting to your medical appointments


A highly valuable benefit of Medicaid coverage is accessing non-emergency transportation to your medical appointments. Through our Medical Assistance Transportation Program, eligible clients can schedule a shared ride to appointments, Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. Non-emergency transportation arrangements are available for ambulatory, wheelchair, or stretcher-based clients. Vehicles are equipped for clients with limited mobility and are wheelchair accessible.

To learn more about this service, please carefully review the information below.

  • Contact a case worker for eligibility screening Monday–Friday between 8:00 am and 4:30 pm.
  • For last names beginning with A–K, call 301-600-3101. For last names beginning with L–Z, call 301-600-3364.
  • Have your 11-digit Medical Assistance Number ready, along with the name, address, and phone numbers of your doctors.
  • New and ongoing clients are screened for eligibility every 90 days.

  • Once approved for the program, non-stretcher-bound clients call Paramed at 301-838-8700 to schedule a ride between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday–Friday.
  • Stretcher-bound clients should contact one of the caseworkers at the numbers above under eligibility processing.
  • Please provide the following: your full name; MA number; the name, address and phone number of the provider/clinic; and the date, time, and approximate length of your medical appointment.
  • Transportation arrangements can be made up to 10 business days in advance or a minimum of 48 hours in advance.
  • You MUST give 24 hours’ notice for ride cancellations

  • Transportation is provided only to eligible MA Clients. Children of an eligible parent/guardian receiving transportation assistance can not receive transportation to accompany their parent or guardian.
  • If an appointment is for a child, one (1) parent/guardian may accompany them.
  • Transportation is generally a shared ride service provided only for medical appointments covered by MA.
  • Clients must use available public or personal transportation whenever possible.
  • Eligible adults requiring an attendant to accompany them to the medical appointment must tell a staff member to submit a written order to their doctor.

  • Please be ready and on time for your transportation pickup times.
  • Smoking and e-cigarettes are NOT permitted in any Medical Assistance transport vehicle.
Inappropriate behavior, including loud and disruptive actions will not be tolerated.

Medical Assistance clients who live in Frederick County and do not have access to public or personal transportation may be eligible to use MA shared ride transport services for non-emergency transportation to and from medical appointments.

MA Transportation Services are not intended for emergency medical transportation. Please call 911 if you have a potentially life-threatening emergency.
